Pietermaritzburg
KwaZulu-Natal

When the Voortrekkers reached the fertile hills at the Msindusi river they decided to lay out the capital of their republic of "Natalia" here. They named the settlement after their first Trek leaders Pieter Retief and Gerrit Maritz. Six years later, the British took the town over and erected their administration centre for the province of Natal. The British influence is visible everywhere in town, especially in the grand colonial buildings from the Edwardian and the Victorian era. A landmark is the City Hall built from red bricks in 1893 with its 47 metre high clocktower. Pietermaritzburg is still called the "last outpost of the British Empire" by some, however, the atmosphere is truly African nowadays.

In the new South Africa, Pietermaritzburg (population approx. 350,000) remains the administrative centre of KwaZulu-Natal, sharing the function of a capital with Ulundi in the former Zulu Homeland.

Pietermaritzburg - commercial hub amidst the green hills of the Natal Midlands - is easily accesssible in its position on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban. There are many bus services, rail services as well as the Oribi Airport which offers excellent national destinations and inter-city flights

Taken from http://www.southafrica-travel.net/kwazulu/e2pietmb.htm
So there is more about the airport and hopefully about tickets to fly in South Africa.

Good luck
